One starter and one main dish...

...in Austria.

The starter was sheep cheese parfait with beetroots and pink grapefruit.

The main course was ocean perch with dill cream sauce, rice and broccoli.

(There were also three other courses, but I had to get them from a buffet, and I am not able to serve myself in a visually appealing manner when I am moving along in a line.)

  1. I had done some learning about Austrian cusine from Wikipedia and elsewhere. It sounds like a fantastic cuisine. If there are any particular Austrian dishes that you like, I would like to know.

  2. Hi Hiroyuki,
first of all let me say that the hotel we are staying at is serving rather cosmopolitan cuisine. Yesterday's starter was spring rolls, glass noodle salad and "teriyaki skewer", for example :)
Saturday, when we arrived, they had some traditional roasts. They were carved for the guests by a cook in attendance.
As Ben and I don't eat meat, the traditional Austrian cuisine has not so much to offer for us. The vegetarian choice on Saturday was Käsespätzle, for example, a dish that is also known in Switzerland and Bavaria.
Apart from that, there are mainly sweet dishes for us, like Germknödel, Kaiserschmarrn and Palatschinken.
Generally, the Austrian cuisine is rather meat-centered, with dumplings or pasta or potatoes and cooked vegetables as side dishes. At least that is my impression.
I used to do French lessons and one fellow student of mine was originally from Cambodia. Our teacher (who was French) asked him one day what he liked to eat. And he said: "I like a piece of meat, with french fries and a salad." Our teacher regarded this answer as really barbarian ;)
